New Benidorm City portal

The new corporate website of the City of Benidorm, based on open technologies, puts the emphasis on usability, accessibility and mobility.

Our team specialized in B2C solutions, Paginar.net WEB, designed and developed the portal os the City of Benidorm in collaboration with Telefónica Soluciones and the Hall's New Technologies team. The result is a new corporate website with new look, more services and up-to-date technologies.

One of the central goals of the project was the ease of use. The new portal is "more useful, intuitive, user-friendly, ergonomic, accessible and transparent regarding the City management" in words of the New Technologies Councilman Ruben Martínez. A new content distribution, with more logical structure "makes it easier to find what you are looking for plus it includes a more comfortable and powerful search engine" says Antonio Fuster, the responsible for the website. "Another new feature is that now the website is available in Spanish, Valencian and English", completes the Head of New Technologies Department, Luis Manuel García.

The new website is based on Drupal. A open source CMS that is very flexible and easy to use. The commitment to this software (which is used by the White House, for example) has allowed to implement a new collaborative and decentralized work methodology. Now there are different managers for each area that are responsible for upload and update their contents.

The same site has an adapted and optimized version for mobile devices. All contents of the website of the City of Benidorm are now available from smartphones and tablets of its citizens and visitors, increasing it reach and visibility.

Social SharePoint

SharePoint is the most widely used collaborative platform in corporate environments. There's a lot of tools to enhance it social features.

Companies have been using SharePoint as a collaborative platform for years now and today is the leading communication and productivity corporate solution. This Microsoft software, originally designed for the business world, was used as an integrator of productivity tools to create collaborative environments. With more than ten years old, SharePoint is prior to the Web 2.0 phenomenon and all social networks.

The sustained growth of Internet penetration coupled with the rapid adoption and popularity of social networks like Facebook or Twitter and even YouTube, have profoundly changed the habits of use of new technologies by people. Users are now accustomed to friendly interfaces and applications that organizes content with a different approach, where the focus is on activity, popularity or content virality level. These are the values of a digital and social culture.

These changes have a strong impact on the uptake of corporate tools like Intranets, that must play an important social role within an organization to encourage participation and collaboration. These principles of the social and digital culture should be taken into account when designing a collaborative corporate solution.

There are several alternatives to enhance the social capabilities of SharePoint. First, the fact that Yammer was recently acquired from Microsoft confirms that they are very sensitive to these requirements and it is likely that both products will soon be really integrated, maybe as a unique product. But there are other independent companies that are designing social applications specifically for SharePoint. Here we present some of the most popular and useful to be consider.

SharePoint is more social with Yammer

Yammer is defined as "The Enterprise Social Network" and aims to bring the power of social networks to companies. And precisely the promise is that Yammer is as asy to use as Facebook or Twitter, but as a software specially designed for collaboration within a company.

Yammer now integrates with SharePoint allowing access to certain content and features from both platforms and in both directions. Surely Microsoft will incorporate the Yammer social features within SharePoint shortly.

The most popular social tools in SharePoint with Social Attini Suite

Attini has created a collection of templates for SharePoint for adding social functionality to the platform. For example the type of Twitter microbbloging or the ability to post, share and discuss videos in Youtube style. There's a complete set of interesting tools offered by Social Attini Suite.

Community sites with Bamboo SharePoint Central Community

It allows to create a community website on SharePoint easy and fast. The application is completed with forums, blogs and social networking functions common as rankings and ratings for the most active users. Bamboo Community Central can be used to create internal or external  SharePoint community sites to centralize business communication with customers or suppliers, for example.

Promoting innovation with SpigitEngage

This application offers a simple and intuitive interface to create an intelligent ranking of ideas in order to help companies to identify an transform the best ideas into concrete initiatives promoting innovation within an organization through collaboration-style Web 2.0. SpigitEngage is built on SharePoint so no integration is needed.

Increase productivity by improving communication with SnapTeam

The idea is to gather information and processes of a company with social functions to increase productivity, assuming that is people, not technology, which carries on a business. SnapTeam promises to improve SharePoint communication capabilities for users within an organization. The application is not available as it is in beta and not open to the public yet.

These are just some chosen initiatives. There are many more available. And each of them can add significant value to create powerful social tools with SharePoint.

Interview with María Victoria Chavarini, Human Capital Manager Paginar.net

Human capital is the key to an IT company. Interview with María Victoria Chavarini, responsible for Human Resources at Paginar.net.

Maria Victoria Chavarini
Human Capital Manager

Born in the city of Santa Fe, lived in the city of Rafaela for 18 years and for almost 9 years living in Buenos Aires. She graduated in HR at UCES and has done postgraduate specialization in Strategic HR at UBA. Is considering starting psychology studies to complement her profile. Enjoys picnics with friends, going to the movies and sleep long naps. All long weekends goes to Rafaela to spend some time with her family and childhood friends.

Why is it important a responsible for Human Resources in an IT company?

I would like to mention that in Paginar.net we talk about Human Capital instead of Human Resources. We prefer the word "capital" to strengthen our belief that our people plays an important role in the results of the company. The word "resources" refers to things and goods that are handled. And we speak of "persons" that are a vital part and decide for themselves within an organization.

To have a Head of Human Capital is more productive than not having in any kind of business. But this is more evident in IT industry. It is vital to have someone to take care of managing people to achieve organizational objectives. Note that in the IT sector are key processes: selection, retention and remuneration. This sector requires new forms of selection, greater attention to business and personal needs, constant motivation and competitive salaries.

How is the Human Resources market in the sector?

In three words: competitive (firms are competing for candidates), aggressive (no codes when searching for people in other companies) and small (lack of students and IT professionals). The  employment continues to grow for years, in 2011 growth was 7%, representing a total of 64,300 this job IT, only in Argentina (according to the CESSI).

The boom that lasted 12 years now, and seems to continue, helps students and professionals for the high demand for jobs in all types of organizations (mainly in the private sector, exporter of technology, infrastructure services and software development).

In parallel, the rapid growth of the industry concern to companies due to the a full employment labor market and consequent increasing costs that must be translated into budget attraction, recruitment and retention of qualified professionals.

In this context, when planning an IT project, the human capital becomes the key factor of success. Due to the high demand for IT staff by companies and trade-offs thar are willing to pay, in recent years, as labor turnover behavior continues, the lack of commitment and exclusive monetary interest are recurrent in these students and professionals.

However, these behaviors appear to be decreasing this year due to the global economic crisis and national levels. Still, the demand for IT is greater than the labor stock.

And how will evolve?

I think the IT market sector is strong and steady. May vary more or less but always growing.

While the figures in each market may vary, I believe that unlike other professions, the "informatics" have deals to choose from!

Likes and dislikes about your job?

I enjoy my work. I like what I do. What I like best are the tasks related to working on environment, retaining and help people to develop themselves. Less satisfactory is to make some administrative / accounting work. And of course I do not like having to communicate things that, while necessary, are not pleasant for people.

How would you define a good Human Resources Policy?

Oriented to strategies and corporate goals, always supporting the welfare and development of people who join the company. Today it is necessary that HR policies facilitate the reconciliation of work and family life, many companies have proved to get more productive this way.

What has been the biggest challenge at Paginar.net so far?

Mmm ... when I started working on Paginar.net the challenge was to learn as quickly as possible what was being done, solve pending things, improve practices and get involved with some people to understand their needs.

I'll take this opportunity to thank those who helped me and understood me during my time to adapt! Today, serving nearly a year at the company, I am very glad I accepted the job offered to me by Matias Carena (CEO).

My goal is to promote business growth and make Paginar.net "THE PLACE" to work.

Interview with Mercedes Dondero, Consultant at Paginar.net BUSINESS

Mercedes Dondero, Paginar.net BUSINESS Consultant, discusses about Microsoft Web technologies, professional experience and the value that her role adds to an IT solutions development team.

Mercedes Dondero
Consultant

Born in Buenos Aires, she studied Information Systems at the National University of Luján. With 15 years of experience in the area of systems, works in Paginar.net since 2003. She currently serves as Consultant of Paginar.net BUSINESS at Buenos Aires offices.

What is the role of a consultant in a information technology service company?

The consultant is in charge of providing the best solutions to its clients, taking into account all the variables that make up its current problems (company size, infrastructure, future plans, etc). To fulfill its mission should be constantly looking at new technologies, investigating the application at the very real and concrete situation. It is a very dynamic and creative job.

The best thing and worst thing about your job?

The best: renovation and updating, no time for boredom. Worst: No time to get bored, sometimes to the point that there's not enough time!

What to do and not to do in a development project?

What to do: clearly defined objectives and scope, defining stages of implementation, relieve adequately the requirements. This last point implies a deep understanding of each system component by the provider and the client, both must understand the solution in the same way, so there are no misunderstandings or false expectations and to reach a successful implementation. You have to prioritize communication, optimizing the use of documentation to reinforce it.

What not to do: the opposite of this. Vaguely defined goals, manage requirements as informal a way that it isn't clear, or are lost in a mountain of emails ... is the sure path to failure.

Why use Microsoft .NET technology to develop web solutions?

Because it is a robust and mature platform on which we have extensive experience at Paginar.net. Provides a host of facilities for the development of applications, including: an extensive and comprehensive structure of base classes, possibility of using several different languages, simplified implementation process, interfaces to interact with existing systems developed in other technologies, among others.

Any point in your professional career that make you particularly proud?

I'm especially proud when you have to give a quick and effective solution to a problem. I was appointed to that manny times and the results were very satisfactory. Fortunately I've already accumulated many of these moments in different kind of projects and clients like Marval O'Farrell & Mairal's Intranet, SC Johnson's intranet or the Dalkia's Manager Reports application.

Fight piracy with laws?

The cultural industry need to think a completely new business model not based on copy and distribution.

By Luciano Schlaen, General Director of Paginar.net Europe

This year started heavy with new chapters in the struggle between consumers and the cultural industry lobby for records, films and books downloads control. The first one was the digital blackout that stopped the anti-piracy law known as SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) at the U.S.Congress and Senate respectively. A few weeks later Megaupload, the famous file sharing portal, was shut down along with the imprisonment of its founder, Kim "Dotcom" Schmitz - in New Zealand by the FBI. And this kind of things are likely to continue occurring during 2012.

But legal action will not solve the cultural industry problems.

First, because the cultural industry was never based on copyright. The true nature of the business model of the cine, music and literature was based on effective control of the copying and distribution of these copies. For years, producers, record companies and publishers held an monopolistic dominance on the technical media of reproduction and access to content. And the consumer had no choice but to buy the physical object (book, tape, disk) or go to theaters or concerts to see, hear or read.

Second, because it will be very difficult (if not impossible) to control the ability that people now have to share digital content with laws. The technology destroyed a business model based on the copy and distribution that sustained the cultural industry for decades. It became meaningless at the minute in which a content could by copied and distributed with a single click. And the culture industry is not yet adapted to this new scenario.

And thirdly because it is easier for many consumers to access illegal than legal content. In several places around the world are precisely those producers, record companies and publishers that choke the legal market limiting rights for commercial distribution of their content electronically to force consumers to go to the store. But for consumers it is easier to click than to go to the store. Of course it is also cheaper because the pirate copy is free. But mostly it's easier.

This new scenario involves rethinking the business model completely. If we accept that the traditional chain of adding value in this industry is production - copy - distribution - consumption we have to think of a business model that focuses on production and consumption. Copying and distribution doesn't add value any more. It's as simple as that.

The cultural industry always took care of production, so they know better than anyone how the machinery of creation of records, books and movies works. But there is no experience at the consumption instance. And the focus should be putted at this one not to be under Amazon or Apple wishes.

These are the keys to reinvent an industry that feels in check and still have not found the right answers to the crisis. Perhaps because they have not dared to accept this new reality and not asked the right questions. And it continue to battle on the legal front instead of doing it down in the market with good products and services that adds value for consumers. A value which they are willing to pay for.

The post PC era

The days of the PC are numbered.
We are experiencing the beginning of a new era. One dominated by mobile devices.
Welcome to the post-PC era.

By Sebastián Tedesco, Director of Business Development of Paginar.net

In the coming years we will experience a deepening in convergence of devices. In this convergence process many devices will disappear and new ones that today we can't imagine will appear. If, for example, we take as valid the studies anticipating that by 2014 78% of Internet access will be through mobile devices, we can say that this growth is actually the cancer of the traditional devices.

In the same way that today much of the desktop computers have been replaced by notebooks, notebooks and netbooks will be replaced by tablets, that will be more powerful and more integrated with other devices such as monitors, keyboards and printers. Maybe in three years we'll see the disappearance of netbooks, declining of notebooks, and in six years, notebooks and desktop will be endangered species in the PC world.

In this way it is also likely to see the demise of media players and digital cameras (except professionals), all this being replaced by the "smartphones". We will also witness the emergence of new devices such as media centers and some forms of integration of Internet access in other products such as appliances or vehicles. Today we can see how this trend is appearing in TVs and high-end cars, for example. Some call this "The Internet of things", where objects will be smarter and inter-connected.

Anyway, today we can see that in many homes the place once occupied by the old desktop PC is now a dead and abandoned area. We are clearly at the beginning of the "post PC" era.

Interview with Sebastián Tedesco, Director of Business Development at Paginar.net

Mobility and the future of Internet. Sebastián Tedesco talks about the mobile revolution.

Sebastián Tedesco
Director of Business Development

Sebastián Tedesco is one of the founders of Paginar.net. Studied Industrial Design at Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) and won several international awards - Sony Design Vision 91, Design Preis Schweiz, LG Design Award - for developing pioneering concepts in the field of virtual reality, reality and communication devices lively. Previously he worked as Creative Director Paginar.net. Among other hobbies (playing chess, studying philosophy and mythology, to ski, see good movies) he especially enjoys painting. His works can be viewed at http://sebastiantedesco.blogspot.com.

What is the role of Business Development Department?

The role of Business Development as is stated in Paginar.net has two main areas of action, on one hand the definition and development of procedures and management tools used by Sales team in the three markets where we are present (LATAM, Europe and USA), and secondly investigates and detects trends of new business lines that might be interesting to the company.

In addition to these issues also intervenes in the definition of strategies related to the identity of Paginar.net. Not merely from place of the image but from conceptual identity.

What is the next strategic project?

We are currently facing two projects that are important to the management area and strategic for the company, one for each of these two areas that I defined above. The first one is a Knowledge & Innovation Management project to optimize business process. The second is that we are working on developing a new business unit focused on Internet for mobile devices and platforms.

Why mobile?

Quite obviously, our business is the Internet and we understand (and the market as well) that mobile devices are replacing traditional access devices. Studies of specialized consultancy firms (Ovum and Pyramid) predicts that in 3 years 78% of Internet access will be through mobile devices. For a company like us this is key.

What is Paginar.net experience in mobile development?

We've been working on mobile development for both Web Mobile and WebApp as native iPhone applications. Specially in the U.S. and European markets with clients such as FoxSports, ESPN and MAPFRE, and also internally in experimentally exploring the potential of certain technologies. The plan, now that the market is more sophisticated and start to demand more services of this kind, is to capitalize our experience and expand our range of services with a specialized area. One strategy that is usual in Paginar.net as a method to introduce innovations in services and technologies we adopt.

What can Paginar.net offer to the Internet mobile market?

Two fundamental values.

One is something that is part of Paginar.net and is common to all our business units: our ability to make ours clients projects real and concrete. This may sound like stating the obvious but is something that does not always happen in our industry. We are strongly committed. We never let our clients alone. In a new field such as mobile devices, where there is still a lot of experience to make and way to go, we believe that this is a key value. This is maybe the main reason of Paginar.net growth for the last 18 years.

The other is the technological and circumstantial factors. Until now the main obstacle for mobile technology development is the wide variety of operating systems, platforms, formats, devices, methods of distribution, access to applications and environments. Although the mobile market is growing, the reality is that technologically is very fragmented. This is a major obstacle to both customers and service providers on these platforms. And in this sense Paginar.net can provide technology knowledge and the expertise to execute large projects with hybrid approaches. Something that for specialized suppliers in specific technologies or platforms would be impossible to deal with.

I think this ability to deal with cross-cutting projects along with our extensive experience is a huge competitive advantage.

How will the mobile world evolve? How will impact Internet?

We talked a little about the phenomenon in quantitative terms before and it's clear to where it goes. But I think the most interesting is to analyze this from the qualitative point of view if you want to see how it will evolve and impact our daily lives and business opportunities. And yet what happens when quality meets the quantitative.

You have to understand that the phenomenon is not just mobile connectivity to the network and applications on mobile devices. Mobility adds news possibilities and potentialities that are related to two main factors that do not exist in traditional devices: geolocation and the new hardware (cameras, GPS, accelerometers, altimeters, multitouch screens). In addition, while mobile devices evolves, there are a range of technologies and trends that are reaching the "tipping point" such as cloud computing, streaming technologies, natural language recognition, etc. All this is coming together and bringing great changes and opportunities.

In the next two or three years we will experience a revolutionary turn in our Internet experience thanks to these new factors that enable to implement ideas and concepts that previously seemed unthinkable.

Interview with Giselle Viccini, CFO at Paginar.net

Continuing the series of interviews with team of Paginar.net Giselle Viccini, Chief Financial Officer, emphasizes the importance of the organization as a basis for running a business.

Giselle Viccini
Chief Financial Officer

Born in Buenos Aires, she holds a Degree on Management (University of Buenos Aires).
With 14 years experience in the administrative field, she works at Paginar.net since 2006.
In her free time she likes to go out with friends or family, enjoy the city, and specially traveling, meeting new places or return to those she loves.

What do the CFO does?

To organize and control the administrative and financial processes. Also to manage its people to achieving the goals set by the CEO.

Likes and dislikes of your job?

In my work I like everything. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to solve complex problems, to meet own or CEO's goals. I love challenges and decision-making process. The worst... mmmm... don't like when things don't go as planned, especially if you did everything possible to do so.

How is the market for new technology?

From the Administration perspective the new technologies market is going very well. There is much support from governmental entities for software companies, non-repayable grants and loans at subsidized rates to help improve administrative processes, and achieve quality certification or modify / improve decision-making processes.

What has been the biggest challenge in Paginar.net so far? What's next?

The biggest challenge I experienced when I started working in Paginar.net in 2006. Matías Carena, the CEO, challenged me to carry out a thorough organizational re-structuring. So I had to reorganize and design the processes of the company from scratch! At that time the company had no information to make decisions and organizational structure was not working quite right. Over time, step by step, we put everything in order. It was a total change. Matías is very open minded to new ideas and changes. That was key for a successful organizational change that began in Paginar.net in 2007. Today my challenge is to end the implementation of a comprehensive administrative system, that a few years ago seemed utopia and is becoming a reality.

How would you define a successful business?

A company must be well organized to function. This does not guarantee success. But without organization success is not possible. It is a condition. A company must have the ability to detect where money goes, what is the financial situation, to anticipate problems, be able to respond. In one word: have a vision of the situation at all times.

The activity fever

Every day 140,000,000 messages are tweeted, 800,000,000 people connects to Facebook to share content and generate tons of comments on millions of sites on the Internet. How much of this is really useful, interesting or relevant? How can we handle this volume of information?

By Schlaen Luciano, Director General for Europe of Paginar.net

Article published in Media-tics.com > View

I connect to Twitter and see 14 tweets from the same user: 1 minute ago, 1 minute ago, 1 minute ago, 2 minutes ago, 2 minutes ago, 3 minutes ago and so on. Looking at the posts, some are created by the user and other are retweets. All of them have links. And then I wonder if this user has read what recommends to their followers or just has the need to send three messages per minute at all times all day. It's the activity fever.

On the Facebook corporate webpage activity is in second place, just below the number of users, with the following figures: 900 million items of content created by the users, each of them follows an average of 80 pages, makes 2 billion comments and publishes 250 million posts. Per day.

The activity is to become a good in itself. The criterion is to keep moving. Comes in second to what is published. You have to be first in the timeline. A quick look at the messages posted on Twitter, Fabecook or even LinkedIn and you'll see someone celebrating a delicious meal, one that has labeled a bad photo and a third that has updated his profile :-(

Everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon of the activity to compete for the attention of users. The activity has a positive value in itself. And activity criteria goes against the quality of the content being generated.

However, we are reaching a point of maturity and we are becoming more demanding with our contacts. We want to avoid contamination with irrelevant messages. Social networking and web 2.0 tools can become really useful. A source of valuable information. The key is to select well to our sources. That is, the friends with whom we connect. If your business is full of interesting content to us, then we will be well informed, entertained and updated. Satisfied.

We need to constantly refine the list of contacts to get only what we really want. And so it gets interesting.

Try it.
